Brain Support

Mental health professionals

Many practitioners offer sliding scale fees, and state facilities provide free or low-cost services. Medical aids also offer levels of coverage.

Just like we have different doctors for different parts of our body, we have different professionals for our brain health. Whether you need someone to talk to, practical advice or medical support, there’s a professional who’s trained to help.

Finding the right support

Psychiatrists

Having a doctor specifically for your mental health.

They're medical doctors who can prescribe medication and treat complex conditions.

Counsellors (HPCSA-registered)

Someone to walk beside you through tough times.

Think of them as skilled listeners who can help you find your way through stress, grief, or relationship bumps – but don’t treat severe conditions. Find through: HPCSA directory, community health centres.

Social workers

Your bridge to both emotional and practical support.

They not only listen and guide but can also connect you with resources when life gets overwhelming.

Occupational therapists (mental health)

Partners in making daily life more manageable.

They help you build practical skills and find ways to make your everyday routines work better for you. Find through: OTASA (Occupational Therapy Association of South Africa), hospitals, rehabilitation centres, private practices. Costs involved.

Wellness counsellors (ASCHP-registered)

Your allies in personal growth.

General tips for finding mental health support

Remember: Take your time choosing, because you should find the mental health support that feels right for you.

  1. Ask your GP for referrals.
  2. State hospitals, public district hospitals and clinics have varying levels of support – you may need a GP referral for some services.
  3. Start with your medical aid provider's directory if you have coverage.
  4. Contact South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) | 0800 456 789 for guidance.
  5. Use online therapist finder tools.
  6. Check if your employer has an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).
  7. Consider teletherapy options, which can be more accessible and sometimes less expensive.

Always verify credentials through the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and don't hesitate to ask about sliding scale fees if cost is a concern. Many practitioners offer reduced rates based on your income.
